On December 12, 2019, BridgeTO Youth had the honour to be invited Roche Canada’s head office in Mississauga for the launch of their STEM initiative. This was a full day event filled with activities, workshops and challenges exclusively planned for our youth.

The STEM initiative aimed to work with students to develop skills that will help youth become innovative thinkers and problem solvers. Our youth walked away with more than innovative ways of thinking and an exercise in problem-solving tactics. The workshops exposed our youth and increased their awareness to the multitude of paths available after getting a degree in STEM.

Many falsely believed that the only careers available in the STEM fields are those related to being a doctor or an engineer. This workshop showed them otherwise. In addition to that, our students gained confidence by presenting their business case proposals with their newly acquired knowledge and they did a fantastic job in terms of engagement, understanding, and questioning.

Our youth took their crash course training into immediate application in order to propose solutions to a business case. The case was set up as a competition in which the team that presented the best pitch for a proposed solution to the business case won $200 each (financial awards were generously donated by volunteers). All participating youth received certificates for successfully completing the day at Roche Canada.

The 20 person Roche Canada team who planned, scheduled and made this day happen included those who ran icebreakers for the students, supporting workshop facilitators, the volunteers and the core team.

We at BridgeTo want to thank you for your impactful, generous and thoughtfully planned out day.
